Finding the right location is an essential part of taking great photos. This may seem obvious, but an excellent way to discover great locations near you is to just get out there and start exploring! ... I have to admit, I fell in a river using this process, but I found my adventure spirit!
Ozette Triangle
The 9.4 mile, Cape Alava Loop takes you through a magical forest to a deserted beach, where a splattering of tide pools support all manner of sea creatures.. The shoreline never sleeps and abounds with life. Sea lions bark from a rocky sea stack, otters play in the ocean surf and eagles, ever watching from above, hunt along the shore line. On he return trip, the trail becomes a beautiful cedar boardwalk through dense forest of western red cedar, ancient ferns, salal, and other evergreen life.
Ediz Hook
Ediz Hook is a 3-mile-long sand spit that extends from northern shore of the Olympic Peninsula at Port Angeles in north central Clallam County, northeasterly into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, located about 15-mile west of the larger Dungeness. It is a great place to enjoy the ocean surf on one side and the calm harbor on the other.
Storm King
Mount Storm King is located within the Olympic National Park about 20 miles west of Port Angeles, Washington. The mountain is on the south side of Lake Crescent near Barnes Point, and has an elevation of 4,500+ feet. Although a tough hike for me, it was definitely worth it. It took a lot of guts for me to finish going up the last slope, but the beautiful view at the top was the perfect reward. The birds have been fed on this trail, and if you bring lunch, they dart at you. So, sharing your food with the birds becomes another wonderful photo opportunity.
Marymere Falls
Exploring Marymere Falls. Although not all that big, Marymere Falls is both very picturesque and exquisitely unique. The falling ribbon of water cascades onto the the rough rock, widening into a wedding-white veil before splashing into the waiting pool. The walk to the base of the falls is through a emerald wonderland of leathery-leaved salal, hemlocks jacketed with strands of sage-colored lichen and lush evergreens covered in beards of moss.
Dungeness River
The Dungeness River is a 28-mile (45 km) long river located in the Olympic Peninsula in the U.S. state of Washington. It origines are near Mount Constance in the Olympic Mountains within the Olympic National Park. It flows through the Buckhorn Wilderness, joins with the Greywolf, passes by the town of Sequim, before emptying into the Strait of Juan de Fuca at Dungeness Bay, just west of the Dungeness Spit.
Giant Bigleaf Maple
There is a giant Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) covered with moss and ferns in Olympic National Park near lake Crescent in Washington State. Olympic National Park is home to some of the largest trees in the world, with so many lovely shades of green!
The Olympic Peninsula is a treasure trove of photographic possibilities. Early morning light filters through primeval forests, clouds become trapped in forested canyons, and streams and lakes sparkle in the lowlight of the setting sun. From Puget Sound to the Pacific Ocean, we are blessed to live in a photo-wonderland!
A special thank you to the beautiful models: Paris Bishop, Elita Melody and Shawn Bennett.
